20 Most Powerful Asians in British Media

SELECTION CRITERIA

The main criteria for choosing the list was based on how influential an individual was in the mainstream media. The panel looked at how much autonomy they had in their jobs and what level of editorial control they could exercise in their work.

Related to that was the importance of judging how much impact they had on the general British population. Not just Asian communities themselves but the vast majority of the British population.

This was not a selection criteria based on personal wealth.

Although age was not an important factor, it was relevant to also look at how some where involved in areas that were of increasing importance. So, for example, DJs bobby and Nihal made it high on the list because British Asian music is seen as a growth industry, for which they are the poster boys at prime-time on Radio 1.

Other topical examples include Ahmed Versi, editor of Muslim News, because of the perceived importance of Muslim community issues of which he is an outspoken example.

Some of those on the list did not work strictly in the media, such as the BBC's Group Finance Director Zarin Patel. However with the BBC focused intensely on cost-cutting, an area where she has played an important role, it was seen as only right that she make the list. She does not have editorial control, but she has the power to influence programming budgets.

Special attention was also given to those who had the power to make careers and looked after sizeable teams.
