20 Most Powerful Asians in British Media

The full list (2005)   »   No. 9

Tommy Nagra
Age: 36
Executive producer at Asian programmes unit, BBC

A lifelong BBC employee, Tommy Nagra heads up the BBC's flagship Asian Programmes Unit (APU), which was once responsible for Asian language programmes such as Nayi Zindagi Naya Jeevan. As soon as he took over from Paresh Solanki, Tommy axed the long running Network East and launched later with Desi DNA, now the BBC's main Asian arts and entertainment series.

Of late the APU has been diversifying to produce non-Asian programmes, such as a series on conflicts from around the world. He heads up a sizeable team in Birmingham and has the power to give a significant break to someone's budding career.

Tommy is not a commissioner of programmes however. He has to pitch ideas to the BBC commissioners like other executive producers at the corporation and make what gets approved.
