20 Most Powerful Asians in British Media

The full list (2005)   »   No. 6

Jay Kandola
Age: 41
Head of acquired programming at Channel 4

Jay buys Channel 4's US programming, a big part of its output. With the demise of Friends and Frasier, she was charged with finding new US hits for the channel: she seems to have fulfiled her brief several times over with the smash-hit success of Desperate Housewives and the forthcoming dividend that will result from the big-money snatch of The Simpsons from the BBC.

Having started her career in television at Channel 4 International as a Programme Sales Accountant in 1988, she joined the BBC as a Finance Planner in 1990. She then moved into Acquisitions as Editor in 1994 where she looked after BBC1 feature films and series including Due South and Neighbours. Jay joined Channel 4 in 1998 as Acquisitions Series Buyer before becoming head of acquired programming.

As external programming, specially imports from America, are a core part of Channel 4's schedule and highly popular with Britons, Jay is deservedly high on our list. She would have been higher if it were not for the fact that she has a Controller abover her who has final say on all external programming.
