20 Most Powerful Asians in British Media

The full list (2005)   »   No. 4

Aaqil Ahmed
Age: 35
Commissioning editor, religion at Channel 4

In most broadcasting organisations, religion would not be a priority. But Aaqil Ahmed has made his department a cornerstone of Channel 4's public-service broadcasting commitments and brought high-impact shows to primetime slots. Having recently commissioned Inside the Mind of a Suicide Bomber, God is Black, Putting The Fun In Fundamental and Priest Idol; he is developing more innovative ways of bringing religion to TV.

Ahmed's goal is to modernise TV's relationship with religion; he enjoys a lot of creative autonomy at Channel 4, and has access to high-profile slots in the schedule. He is turning his attention to "multicultural" programming and recently commissioned Won't Marry White.

Ahmed joined Channel 4 from the BBC where he was deputy editor of documentaries at BBC Religion. He was also executive producer of the award-winning BBC season Islam UK and two series of Trouble up North, as well as the recently transmitted series Headhunting the Homeless.
