20 Most Powerful Asians in British Media

The full list (2005)   »   No. 2

Meera Syal
Age: 41
Writer/actor/ broadcaster

One of the most bankable and recognisable faces on British TV, writer and actor Meera Syal continues to go from strength to strength. Achieving a breakthrough with her acting in Goodness Gracious Me, and more recently The Kumars at No 42, she is unmatched by any other Asian actor as a household name.

Among her many appearances, she has been a literary advocate on The Big Read and featured on the genealogy hit Who Do You Think You Are?.

Syal's close involvement with the popular West End musical, Bombay Dreams, propelled her into the super-league. She made a small fortune from her stake in the production, writing the story and helping to take it across the Atlantic to New York.

Her first novel, Anita and Me, was turned into a movie and her second, Life Isn't All Ha Ha Hee Hee, is being made into a prime-time BBC1 drama.
