As presenter of the Six O'Clock News on the BBC, Alagiah has reported from many of the world's trouble spots. His reports from Africa have won plaudits from his peers, and he has become increasingly influential at BBC News.

His Sri Lankan origins meant he was ideally placed to report from the scene of the Asian tsunami disaster.
