Deranged Marriage company introduces new play
28th August, 2007

The theatre company behind Deranged Marriage is back with a new production, There's Something About Simmy.

It will be one of the biggest productions put together by Slough-based Rifco Arts, opening at Theatre Royal Stratford East next week.

The show centres around Simmy, a newly wed bride who has come to Britain from India. But her marriage does not get off to a good start when her husband Raj runs away on the wedding night and leaves her.

She is left alone at her new home with a crazy family made up of community conscious mother in law, a diabetic granddad obsessed with biscuits and Mindy her neurotic sister in law. Not allowed to leave the house in case the aunties become suspicious, Simmy soon begins to regret ever setting foot in the UK.

But friendship with an unlikely kindred spirit who lives next door and her new family's prodigal son soon has the community talking. Simmy soon begins to realise that she can make her own happy ending.

Upcoming actress Vineeta Rishi plays the role of Simmy. She has recently been seen on ITV's The Last Detective (as PC Kapoor) and played a part in Asian Network's radio soap Silver Street.

Touring with Rifco Arts for the first time will be Mina Maisuria, who plays the scariest Auntie in the community, and Ernest Ignatius who made an unforgettable impression as Priest Kumar (with the Elvis quiff and sharing The King’s philosophy) in Meera Syal's Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee.

The play also stars Harvey Virdi as mother-in-law, Goldy Notay and Karen Fisher-Pollard. All three had previously starred in Deranged Marriage too.

Written and directed by Pravesh Kumar, There’s Something about Simmy will begin touring around the country from September. He also wrote and directed Deranged Marriage, which returned to theatres three times.

Rifco Arts' last production was Meri Christmas.
