'Mad Maya' storyline draws fury from Hindu viewers
2nd December, 2004

ITV has become embroiled in controversy after an episode of Coronation Street featured the destruction of a statue of the Hindu God Ganesha. Hindu groups have urged programme makers to consult them in the future regarding the portrayal of their community on screen.

In the episode of Coronation Street broadcast at 7:30 pm on 24th November, Maya threatens Sunita to be submissive or be "beaten to death by Ganesha, the God of good fortune." Then Maya hits Sunita with the statue on her head to prove her point.

The incident has outraged Hindus who say there is little sensitivity shown to their religion.

"This story line has angered many Hindus all over UK because it shows a gross level of insensitivity to millions of Hindus who worship Lord Ganesha by portraying him as the killer of Sunita," explained Mr Ishwer Tailor, president of the Hindu Forum of Britain.

Jyotsna Thanki, President of the Hindu Council of Birmingham says: "Hindu images are being used again and again in an offensive manner, sometimes deliberately, but most of the times out of ignorance or lack of understanding. That’s why we are appealing to all those who use Hindu icons to at least check with our national organisation, the Hindu Forum of Britain, so that any mistakes can be corrected before the story is printed or broadcast."

ITV has apologised for any offence caused but says it was clear "Maya's actions were that of a deranged woman". The company added that it was clear Maya "had no regard for anyone or anything at the moment that the line was said and any right-minded individual would believe her actions to be abhorrent".

"It is a drama and at the particular time the character was projected as being in a deranged state of mind with no respect or regard for anyone or anything," the spokesperson added.

Storylines featuring Dev (Jimmi Harkishin), Sunita (Shobna Gulati) and Maya (Sasha Behar) have become increasingly prominent of late in Coronation street following the recent wedding between Dev and Sunita.
