British actor Naveen Andrews, famous for his role in the BBC drama Buddha of Suburbia and most recently seen in the extravagant Bride and Prejudice, is starring in a new romantic comedy opening across America.
Andrews plays John, the love interest of Jamie Harris (Marguerite Moreau, pictured) in the film Easy, recently acclaimed at the Sundance film festival.
Jamie Harris is a neurotic but bright 25-year-old with a career naming peculiar consumer products. Her problem is the confusion over her own identity. Sex is easy, but love isn't, as the movie's strapline says. She meets two men around the same time, and realises she must confront what she is most afraid of.
Jane Weinstock, the film's writer and director, recently said: "LA is a racially mixed city, and I thought Easy should show that. I also thought casting African Americans and an Anglo Indian in roles that are usually white could subtly address the issue of racial stereotyping."
Naveen Andrews moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, telling AiM the country had more roles for actors from different ethnic minorities than the UK. He is currently playing a middle eastern man in the American network thriller Lost, an ABC series that will arrive on Channel 4 next year. It follows a group of 48 survivors who get stuck on a tropical island and have to work together to survive.
Andrews was previously acclaimed for his performance as Juliet Binoche's lover in The English Patient, and has starred in Mira Nair's Kama Sutra. He trained at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
