Bradford Riots director up for Bafta award
7th April, 2007
Writer and director Neil Biswas has been nominated for a Bafta award, it was revealed last week, for his drama Bradford Riots. The feature length programme, broadcast on Channel 4 last year, recreated the events of 2001 through the eyes of British Pakistani youths involved in the riots.
He told AIM magazine in an interview last year that to research the drama he was "very careful" in making sure he was getting opinions and material from both sides.
"I think it's a very very complex issue. I was careful and had to remain untouched by what people were saying. But it was important that I told the story [Bradford Riots] from a specific Muslim family's perspective," he said.
Biswas is currently working on another film for Film 4 and a drama for Channel 4. He also wrote Channel 4's two-part drama Second Generation.
Lead actor for the drama, Sacha Dhawan (pictured), recently won the RTS award for his acting.
Also nominated for a Bafta is Bharat Nalluri for directing episodes of Life On Mars.
He is best known for his work with the independent production company Kudos Film & Television in the early-to-mid 2000s, directing episodes of Spooks, Life on Mars and Hustle. He has also worked on films including directing The Crow: Salvation in 2000.
Nalluri also directed a mini-series for HBO called Tsunami: The Aftermath, broadcast in December 2006. This two-part drama told the story of the tragic events that occurred in Thailand in December of 2004. It is entirely fictional but is based on interviews and research of the actual event.
Winners will be announced on 22nd April at an awards ceremony at The Dorchester in London's Park Lane.
