Internet blogs band together for Quake Day
26th October, 2005
Internet blogs have declared today as Blog Quake Day in an effort to raise money for the earthquake in Pakistan and keep the disaster in the news agenda. The charity Oxfam today told the BBC that many rich countries have so far failed to support a UN appeal for victims of the quake, with less than 30% of the £175m sought being promised. It said the US, Japan, Germany and Italy had given less than their "fair share" as large economies.
Belgium, France, Austria, Finland, Greece, Portugal and Spain had so far donated nothing at all.
To galvanise the public as the disaster goes further down the news agenda, Pakistani and Indian bloggers from all over the world have joined the efforts to raise more money as winter approaches.
The effort is being spear-headed by Indian blogger DesiPundit who said in his appeal: "Every single dollar contributed, multiplied by the vast numbers of bloggers, will go a long way in helping these people rebuild their lives.
"Our experience of the last few weeks showed us that, no matter how small our blogs, and no matter how few our readers, the words we write and the way we use our blogs can have far-reaching consequences."
The call was supported by the American Muslim blog Chapati Mystery and has since spread across the internet with nearly a 100 blogs supporting the call.
AIM's sister magazine Pickled Politics is also supporting the cause and has carried news and information on the Kashmiri earthquake since the day of the disaster.
