Rishi Rich and Bobby Friction nominated for radio Oscars
6th April, 2005

Producer Rishi Rich and DJ Bobby Friction are both nominated in the Sony Radio Academy Awards, it was announced today.

The Rishi Rich Project feature in the Kiss 100 line-up every Sunday 9pm - 11pm. The crew, who also feature Juggy D and Jay Sean, are in the Specialist music award. They are competing against Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Tim Westwood, and BBC Radio 3’s Andy Kershaw.

Rishi Rich is currently in Dubai while the rest of the crew are touring India.

Bobby Friction (pictured), co-presenter for Radio 1 on its flagship ‘Asian Urban Nation’ show with Nihal, is up for an award in the News programme show of the year category.

Vote Friction, a documentary he fronted for Radio 1, involved him following the BNP last year during their campaign for the local elections in Burnley.

He told AiM today the documentary was "special". "It grew out of a brainstorming session at the BBC. We knew we wanted to cover the local elections. In fact one of the ideas we came up with was for me to stand as a candidate in the elections themselves, backed by the BBC. But we knew that wasn’t going to happen.”

"We definitely wanted to cover Burnley, where the BNP was quite active. Deep down we knew getting the BNP and me involved would make an interesting feature."

So what did he discover after spending so much time with the BNP at an intimate level? "It made me realise that the stresses and strains on race in Britain are very individual," he says. "I also saw in the bile of the BNP, a responding bile amongst some of my own people."

He adds: "I realised their supporters were just as lost and confused with 21st century globalism as anyone else's. And I realised the BNP are radical but only as radical as every other religious and nationalist party that I've ever met."

Bobby and Nihal won a Sony award in 2003 for the Specialist music category, the same as Rishi Rich’s current nomination.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in London on May 9.
