News in brief - who is doing what?

  • Kashaf Chaudhry has directed 'The Real Da Vinci Code', which will be shown on Channel 4 on February 3rd at 9.00pm. The programme is an in depth look into the truth behind the phenomenally successful novel 'The Da Vinci Code'. It's made millions for author Dan Brown and has sparked huge controversy surrounding it's central claim, that Jesus was married and had a child.

    It also claims that this bloodline exists to this day and that this is the true Holy Grail. The documentary is a journey through the world of grail theories and is presented by Tony Robinson, he of Time Team and Black Adder fame. Kashaf's previous credits include a documentary about the Peasants Revolt (C4), Extreme Archaeology (C4) and the Hajj (C4).


  • The BBC's Asian entertainment series Desi DNA (presenters pictured) kicks off for a six part run beginning this Tuesday (25th Jan) at 11:20pm on BBC2. The first show returns with a special lead piece on 'Behzti', and there's a range of interesting arts, culture music and lifestyle films in the rest of the series.

  • Organiser Christine Gupta is looking for a convincing 'Indian Elvis' to put on a short show for one night as part of a launch event that her company is organising in Edinburgh in March. She is looking to find anyone who can put on a professional and entertaining performance of just a few numbers. The audience will be a mix of Bangladeshi and Scottish business people and local dignitaries, so a cross-over performance will most likely keep them all happy. Contact her by email.


  • The UK Film Council is holding a one day workshop, 0n 27th January, exploring how you can take advantage of the new and upcoming technologies in digital filmmaking. The programme is of special interest to those filmmakers who are looking for new forms and outlets for their work. There will also be opportunities to get one-on-one time with industry practitioners including Caroline Cooper Charles, who oversees the UK Film Council's short film funding programme; Geoff Lowe, Managing Director of Filmserve, interactive cinema specialists; Alasdair Scott, Creative Partner for Filter UK - Content for Mobiles; Abigail Dankwa, Head of Acquisitions at the Community Channel and others.

    Workshop participants will also be invited to a preview screening of Jonathan Caouette's film Tarnation. This award-winning feature was edited using iMovies software and will be released by Optimum Releasing next spring. The film starts at 20.10hrs at the National Film Theatre. David Dunkley Gyimah, journalist and filmmaker will host the day. More information here.


  • A group of popular Asian actors and actresses came together last weekend, in association with Really Useful Theatres, Noon Products and Rubicon to introduce youngsters from the East End to the West End stage. Actor Raj Ghatak, who played Sweetie in Bombay Dreams, was joined by actresses Pooja Shah (EastEnders), Bindya Solanki (EastEnders, Deranged Marriage) and Nila Aalia (Bombay Dreams) to conduct classes which included a question and answer session, dancing, improvisation and drama games, all culminated in a mini performance. The youngsters took part in the day which was held at The Apollo Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue.


  • British comedy's biggest stars are to perform a one-off super gig to help raise money for the tsunami disaster. Big names including Johnny Vegas, Victoria Wood, Lee Evans, Meera Syal, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Jimmy Carr will appear in the Comic Aid show on February 22. All funds raised from the show - which will later be screened on BBC1 - and its resulting DVD will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee.


  • Pathaan vs Gaudi, Swami (Desi Rock) and Sonik Gurus will be playing live on Saturday 29th January at Cargo in East London. It is a special one-off event. 8pm-3am, £6 b4 9pm, £10 after. Advance from: ticketweb.co.uk. Cargo, 83 Rivington St, Shoreditch, London. EC2A
