British Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus need to embrace free speech

Wednesday, 3rd October

Religious groups instinctively want to censor ridicule of their religion. But it harms them in the longer term, says editor Sunny Hundal. Ordinary people should accept that free speech helps them.

Sunny,
I heard you interview on the BBC, and i agree with everything you said. The point i also think you should have made is that, in an unprecendented time of hysteria over Muslims and their religious ethos, the people who have created such a fuss about this group f**k Islam do themselves no favours in the politcal eye. What we hear and see again is yet another group of Muslims objecting to someone condemning their religion. Another set of propoganda for the people who object against Islam to fuel their arguements. What these people should be doing is trying to move the image of Islam to a better place - not spending their time objecting to something which is all honesty is a childish waste of time.
Everyday people post things on facebook which one could perceive as inflammatory, what we should do is ignore these factions and then their existence would be a futile. Muslims have GOT to learn that in order for people to view them without apprehension or suspicion, they need to stop creating a fuss over events such as this. Freedom of speech allows Asain to condemn people and groups such as the BNP. They must be rubbing their hands at yet another opportunity to condemn Islam and tarnish all Muslims with the same brush. Whether is be Danish cartoons or some group on facebook; freedom of speech is here to stay, they may as well get used to this as no amount of time objecting about things which are not in your control is going to change this. In order to move the image of a society forward, it takes individuals smart enough to realise when to object, and when to simply ignore.

just read this book by a pakistani woman, she just finished writting a book about her experiences. here is some blurb on it. its interesting, but is not aimed as a snipe at anyone.

"Travels of a BMW (British Muslim Woman)"
By JONES, Geoffrey (and Anon) This is a story from a girl who has always wanted to experience life in full but was never really allowed to.
She is a first generation Muslim girl living in the UK. She is a practising Muslim who adheres to the five pillars of Islam. She studied hard, worked hard, bought her first home and her beloved Citroen Saxo.
Her life took a jolt when she reached 36, as she found that she owed someone a coffee. Apparently he had done some work as a favour for her a year earlier and told her she owed him a coffee for it. This is her story and experiences.
Here she outlines her first few travels through life.
