Fusian magazine

by bedouin

Has anyone seen it? What do we think? Me: Tired of the Asiana's of this world making girls think they are outside the media circle rather than in it: a part of it.

Readers ARE outside the media circle,
silly. Otherwise you're just writing for
your media chums and wannabes.
Dur...

Yes, it hurt my feelings. I'm a
sensitive flower really, Thuggie.. I've
been cry-wanking into my pillow ever
since.

My point is, every Asian magazine
(and I've been with five of them)
attracts people I like to call the
WannaBy Whores. Because they
want to see a Byline – their name in
print, their picture in the mag. They're
whores because they approach
every single mag going and, the
moment one uses them, their
allegiance changes. (The amount of
CVs that pop up in my facebook
account and pot shots taken by
those I ignored is quite something).

The thing is bedouin, to put together
any mag to please these people is
ridiculous, even if they can do the
most damage when spurned.

Know your readers. They don't buy
Asian mags because they want to go
to a crap media bash where Metz
and Trix are playing and Ameet
Channa recognise you...

Sensitive flower? You?! Pillow wanking?! Theres the witty banter that I've come to expect from you. Your concept of the wannaby whores is prob right, but ur one to talk....your mug takes up nearly half of your "plight of asian man' page....don't give me that crap dude!

Whats wrong with changing your allegance when companies (this only applies to Asian), especially ones who stroke your.... ego, if thats not enough they employ these bright and talented individuals, give them an 'editor' jobs (i use the term loosely, as u do too I imagine) and pay them peanuts to work like 6/7 days a week!

CVs on yr facebook?! Whoever is reading this....shabbs is the wrong guy to ask.....unless you wanna work for free or next to nothing!

This guy is prob the only guy in the industry who prob earns a decent sum of cash, but still pinches fags off others and falls asleep at his desk....get my drift?!

I felt compelled to respond to this post. I am a model and I have worked with ALL 4 of the Asian magazines on the market;
Asiana, Asian Woman, Xeher and now Fusian. In response to Shabb's "wannabywh*res" theory, that is very unfair.
With respect to modelling (I have no idea if you're referring to the editors or the models) the UK Asian market is very small. Therefore if freelance models like myself only pledge allegiance to 1 magazine, we would never progress. I can't speak for anyone else but I have never gone out of MY way to contact any magazines and asked to feature in their pages. I have always been approached! (I heart FB)

Fusian is Birmingham based and they aim to promote the Fashion & Beauty talent primarily from the Midlands. It is an exciting concept because it moves away from heavy advertising and tries to build more content into itself. It is also a monthly publication. Asiana, albeit a very beautiful magazine with a sweet team (I have friends there), is full of fashion adverts, which is fine, if the consumer is interested in glossy fashion or make-up ads.

In my opinion, all 4 of the mentioned magazines have different layouts and doing well. A lot of work goes into these magazines so let's be kind and appreciative!

There's enough space for 4 magazines. God dammit. Maybe now we'll get even better quality in our magazines!

I think it's about time we had more choice as a consumer. Hear Hear!

After all darling, competition is healthy!

Gulzaeb, there's space for plenty
hon. I actually think Fusian is a great
read. I was responding to the weird
'make readers feel they're part of the
media' sentiment

And thuglife, thanks for proving my
point about what bitter dejected
media peeps do

Zar, if you're reading this, well done
dude. I'm proud of ya x

Thicken Eyelashes And Eyebrows: A Guide
For many, the eyes are the focal point of their face. Yet, even if the color and look of your eyes is amazing, your eyelashes and your eyebrows may be lacking. Increasing their thickness will enhance and beautify your eyes dramatically.

I know the grammar was terrible in the initial post but how could anyone take what bedouin to be offensive?

I thought she was saying that she thinks Fusian magazine has been started up by people who are tired of not making it in Asian media (....in Asiana specifically). By starting up this mag, they feel apart of it. I don't think she was referring to readers at all. Its her opinion nothing more.

I could be wrong...(but that doesn't happen very often lol ;-) )

Shabbs thank you for your insight into WannaBy Whores. Personally I love the emails by people who are so passionate about writing but can't string a sentence together without making a spelling mistake or using text speak!

Then again shouldn't we be nurturing raw talent mr editor in chief? x

Asiana is fantastic. No one can deny. But it IS full of ads and nothing much else these days.
Sorry my earlier comment sounded bitter. I meant that Fusian is more "accessible" than Asiana. Asiana is...what's the word....Clique Celebrity. Same old people on the circuit...Ameet Channa..Preeya Kalidas. Anita Rani. Konnie....Give the rising stars a break will ya? Yawn Yawn. Need to hear some real life stories dude. Show us some love will ya?

I'm not fighting the Asiana corner here because Shabbs can defend himself... But what is with the "it is FULL of ads" comment?
Have you seen a commercial mainstream magazine lately?
Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, You and Your Wedding etc... Magazines sell advertising space, that is what they do...to survive!
Plus magazines sell brands better than any other media format so businesses rely on magazines to sell their products and services. Its very much a two way street.

Couple of things bedouin, don't know how you're affiliated to Fusian but perhaps you shouldn't come on here, just to throw digs at another magazine or in a roundabout way promote your own...
Your first comment was fair - in my book - that is the reason people are drawn to starting up their own magazine because they feel let down but the ones which currently represent them or they want to tap into new markets...
But your last two comments are naive to say the least, and I don't think you're doing Fusian magazine justice by coming on here, spewing your bitterness.
Everyone has a right to their opinion but when that opinion is dumb founded and outright offensive then maybe you should keep quiet.

no offence, righty. but I've been a photographer on the circuit for years at various mags and seen a lot. also a camera man at small-timeasian channels. guess I'm just disillusioned with it all. Great job to all.

Good points (how refreshing to be
having a debate about asian media
on this forum for once!).

When a magazine such as Asiana or
Asian Woman carry lots of ads, it
isn't merely a case of greed over
content - they are fashion ads, in a
fashion magazine, and if the fashion
houses didn't get business precisely
because people said 'I want that
outfit I saw in Asiana or Asian
Woman', they wouldn't waste their
money advertising with is. Ergo, our
readers want them there.

The downside is, among all these
ads, the editorial content can get lost
- in our last issue alone there are 118
editorial pages. The real life story we
did on the girl about to have a
mastectomy, for instance, is one of
the articles I'm most proud of. And in
our 24-page crush section, we do
nothing but give exposure to
emerging new talent.

I do however totally disagree with
your comment: 'ordinary people ARE
the new celebrity.'

Reality TV was created to promote
this line of thought. But guess what?
All those people, your jades and your
prestons, all became celebrities,
albeit naff ones.

So why promote naff ones when you
can highlight the most deserved? It's
not like mainstream mags are falling
over themselves to write about any
Asian that isn't or isn't married to
Meera Syal, is it?

We're all in the business to promote
the best of all that's Asian -
entertainment, fashion and so on.
Not to write about our cousin's fit
boyfriend. That's all I'm saying :-)

Bloody hell a real topic for a change....

Shabs - point re metz and trix just made me LOL....(sometimes I wonder whether where the hell our mainstream music 'interests' are going...but thats a different topic altogether!)

Re the wannaby/wanna be whores issues, I do see your point, but correct my naivity, but if their freelance, then technically they aren't a particular magazine's 'property' are they? I can understand of they suddenly get really cold towards revious mag's when they are in vogue with new mags, but again, isn't that their prerogative?

Bedouin keep it going dude, your indirect CPR is much needed here at the moment in this A & E ward lol ;-)

Shabbs, interesting point about good editorial getting lost in the ads, but isn't that why we have front covers and contents pages?
Well done on the article. Bit
surprised that you guys have less than 35% editorial (the industry standard is 40/60!) maybe you could be the driving force for change huh?!

Wow Raja that's a good point! Even I'm impressed lol.
I think Shabbs meant that they were approaching him for work within the office rather than freelance?
There's no shame in running to the one who is paying you the most lol - just don't bad mouth your previous employer/mag in the process.

You misunderstand. I'm not talking about 'you're either with us and no one else' bollocks that some mags insist on (Asian woman used to try to make celebs sign exclusivity deals - our policy is, go to who you like, just make sure you give us the proper time of day when you come to us).

Nor are we fascistic about staff movement. Our ex editor Poorna is now working with Henna, with my blessing.

I'm talking about the numbnuts that think they can do a job, beg and plead so much you mistake their drive as passion and commitment, then after they do a trial period and aren't used because they're crap, they go round slagging the mag off.

THOSE are the people you shouldn't write a mag for, even if they're the most insistent and wrathful.

Keep any mag for real readers, who only care for a good read and don't have a score to settle...

x

Oh right, I understand now dude.

You seriously got me intrigued on this, cos I've met a couple of models who had axes to grind against certains mags, and when I prodded the issue (im a natural born interviewer, cant help it...) they seriously never had a solid reason, and YES your right, they didnt appreciate the break that they initially got from those 'awful people'. You kinda just touched a point I encountered....

"making girls think they are outside the media circle"

What bedouin is stating is that the 'editorial' slant' of Asiana is snobbi9sh, elitest and looks down its nose to readers.

Reading Shabbs' first post about what he thinks of his readers certainly justifies this.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! If you're so frustrated with writing for WannaBy's... why don't you move to mainstream... dahlink?

Or do you enjoy the thrill of being a big fish in a small pond?

Oh the pompousity of the wannaBy.

I don't bite the hand that feeds me -
the hand that feeds me are women
who care about shopping and beauty
and all those things wannaBys think
so shallow.

I don't give a toss about the
mainstream. IIn the past 15 years
I've spearheaded Emag for Eastern
Eye, snoop and Asian Woman &
Bride aamong others precisely
because I care about what REAL
Asians want from a magazine.

And you clearly can't read. "If you're
so frustrated with writing for
WannaBy's"

It's precisely those pretentious bitter
holier-than-thou knobs that I DON'T
have the time of day for

Keyboard warriors, honestly...
