Self-publishing

by Twinkle_2005

Hey
Any of you guys gone down this route

I really want to get my collection of poetry published, i have been writing for years (had my first piece of writing published at 15). I do have a journalistic background but have always been more interested in poetry and fiction.

It seems virtually impossible to ban agent- that is of course unless you happen to be Jordan/Katie Price.

I have been looking around and found a couple of sites that do self publishing such as lulu and iuniverse.

The finishing products to look good- but do they actually sell? Any one had any experience? What would you recommend.

I have been writing of course for mags etc and entering competitions etc so i am trying to be productive but kinda stuck in a rut right now

Poetry is a toughie. Most literary
agents say 'no poetry' than they say
no to children's fictions. I mean,
when was the last time you went to
Borders and saw a collection of
poems by a new poet? It's a niche
I'm afraid hon. Try Revenge Ink.
They specialise in Asian authors and
may well go for a collection of poems
if they think they're edgy enough x

Thanks Shabbs

Don't really wanna limit myself to specifically focusing on the Asian circle. But will def give the above try

There are collections out there in major book stores and i ahve gone to a couple of workshops such as the poetry cafe in convent garden etc which is great and in recent years, it's really picking up.

People still very much admire the work of George Mackay Brown and current modern day poets Jean Sprackland and Fiona Sampson (currently my favourites). I guess i just gotta keep going. There seems to be a lot of established jounrals in the states which take on international writers and i know the UK has Poetry Review and Iota - i'll give me a try!

Thanks for your help x

Not had anything published, I'm really surprised when a poet like you spells you, 'u'.

And you don't want to hear my spoken word...

Although I did a bit of self-publishing. But I got arrested when a woman spotted my hidden camera in the changing room.

Articulate, even... Oh, hang on... Maybe I wasn't being thick, I was being URBAN!

And you want want to get me making remarks about your confession about dropping your pants to your knee caps... I don't think we want to know how you make money on Compton St.

That's right. I 'want want' you to make remarks to further highlight that you missed the subtle irony in my previous post.
Blud.

Relax.

"That's right. I 'want want' you to make remarks to further highlight that you missed the subtle irony ..."

Further your irony? You only made one remark so how could it be furthered?

Okay, I accept your were being ironic, but irony is sometimes difficult to dectect when you do not know the person who is being ironic. For all I know you may have believed what you wrote because quit frankly, "Urban, hip-hop dudes do speak like that and are proud (and brag) of their low slung baggy jeans and using text speak to communicate. So how could I tell?

Have you seen the cheapskate bastards that can't afford the low slung pants and opt for dropping standard pants?

They walk like they have a load in their Y-fronts or are afraid of exposing their skidmarks.

I always wonder if they are designed like that to disipate the blow of an intended kick to the bollocks.

The bagginess is proportionate to the volume of the load divided by the speed of the kick to the size of the scrotum.
Something like that. Dunno.

Either way, they look like fuckwits when they try and run.

Hi Poison

That's shame you stopped writing. If it's something you really want to do stick to it. I just recently won a poetry comp so am super excited!

I have had a couple published in mags and I have my own web page. There are so many great poetry journals out there such as Iota, Dream Catcher, Fringe as well Poetry Review which is the longest established poetry mag. Plus loads of great American ones which i have submitted to so fingers crossed!

It is a difficult niche, but in recent years it really has become popular again.

I haven't done any spoken word events but i have been to a couple. I went to one at the Poetry cafe in Convent Garden and one in Shoreditch a while back. Some of the readings were from well established poets to newcomers and were really inspiring. I haven't built up my confidence yet to do readings!

What genre or theme to experiment with? I have recently fallen in love with the Haiku form and also I love writing free verse proses/poems too

It is a tough market but I’m getting there!

Good luck Twinkle

I recently had mine published

Whatever you do, avoid iuniverse

Quality is great but you want it to sell as well right?

It surprises me that whilst a numbner of peole have updated the language and delivery of poetry, no-one has done anything about the way it is presented...

Perhaps a poetry podcast which you could post, email round, or even send through mobile phones.

You may want to get some friends or random people to
read out the poems.

And you don't need to be veruy technically adept... you could even film/edit it on your mobile phone.

There you go... Po-Casts. YOu heard it here first.

And that'll be 15% of your earnings and a shag every Tuesday.

Mola there is a system in place where you can get your poems professional reviewed/critiqued by professional poets who are brutally harsh but also give great feedback

I believe Twinkle is doing this the right way and that the fact that she just won a recent international comp shows that she has mastered the delivery and presentation of it

Hi Veer

Yes i know about that service. It is available to members of the poetry Society there is a fee but it is also available to non members too

I submitted mine and got back a positive response. What they told me was that i had a lot of creative ideas but were forcing them into one piece. I took it all on board and reworked it and they got accepted!

I agree with Mola though, there are a lot of poets out there who just don't seem to care about the way it should be presented. That is what infuriates editors the most

Editors hate cliches.

poetry doesn't necessarily need to rhyme but it should be rich in metaphor and be able to paint a mental image in the readers mind. Plus, your stanzas should be presented ideally in 3-4 line blocks

the Haiku form is quite restricted as it follows the 5-7-5 syllable rule and the most common Japanese form consists of no more than 3 lines yet there are a lot of people who don't know the difference between similies and syllables

The best thing to do is to read up on the market that you are submitting to and tailor your piece to fit the criteria

Good luck with your book Veer

Is it on Amazon?
