Asian women drinking - guardian feat

Hi guys,
I'm compiling a feature for the guardian, based on something that happened in India recently. It's about the Mangalore bar raid, where a group of thugs broke into a bar, and beat up any women they saw drinking. Apparently 'women shouldn't drink or be seen in pubs' - these guys were Hindu, by the way.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone (it can be anonymous) who thinks if there is still that attitude prevalent in the Asian community, which is that Asian women should not go to bars or drink. I can think of quite a few first gen Asians who'd think this, and some inbred rudeboys I've encountered in bars too. Any thoughts - from men or women - would be much appreciated, along with why parts of the community still think like this. Also, any personal stories.
My email addy is poornashetty@yahoo.com, it'd be great to hear from you.

Well, we all like to indulge in some wine etc from time to time after either a long hard week at work, during holidays, special occasions etc. There is nothing wrong in that -providing this is done in moderation. You see so many young women getting themselves paralytic (Asian women as well) that it makes you think, is this really worthit?
I myself like to drink wine, but don't go out drinking every weekend to get plastered, in fact the last time i had a drink was prob new yrs eve! I have an active social life- mainly due to work so am always out and about with clients etc but don't feel i need to drink every time i'm out to have a good time. Mainly because i hate that sluggish feeling and i'm a bit of a light weight lol.
I saw this story on the news today and was appalled as i hate violence-especially against women. It is a bit unfair for men to smoke and drink and not women as we all have a place in society and deserve our equal rights.
So to answer your question, I think some men in Asian communities will always have that old fashioned mentality, though not all men think like this. There is nothing wrong with Asian women drinking providing they know their limits, drink in moderation and most importantly, still uphold that self- respect for themselves.
