A bit 'rich'

by mola ram

I finally paid attention to the interview clip in the box on the right of the screen.

Hugely ironic at what he says there. I have mates who sent in some great 'desi' tracks tracks to his show on Kiss FM. They never got played because apparantly they 'didn't fit in with the show'.

Meanwhile every track in the 2.9 catalogue got 'rishi rinsed'.

hypocrite.

Mola, you have to resepct a man who has a unique sonic imprint...

Especially when he uses the SAME sonic imprint over and over again, because korg only released the m3 last year. But fair play to the chap, as he set the precedent for the "tumbi, snare and 909 kck drum" in EVERY desi track thereafter. And at least he does actually do all the desk/donkeywork himself, unlike quite a fair few of the others.

In the kingdom of the deaf, the one beat producer is king.

But mola, i still respect him as a creative bod, cause he's helped a lot of people careerwise. Fair enough, his sound has been used a lot, and by others too, but he and B21 or bally jagpal (showing my age there...oo-er etc)were the ones who really boosted production values, cause otherwise a lot of the music was badly produced.

Just think back to when there wasnt any "mainstream" scene, and the club nites were just a mish-mash...it's guys like this who gave everyone something to go for and raised the game. That's something else, man.

I can still remember sitting in a mate's living room listening to various demo's he'd get sent for his radio show, and most were really shit, but there'd be something every week that would stick out. Some of that stuff went on to do really well. I can remember hearing a rough or demo of desi rock during that time, and thinking "that roti kapada aur makaan sample is really annoying", but the simplicity of it is what hit the mark. Same with sona family...i thought "fucking hell, these guys are really pushing the envelope!...this is great!".

They were good times, but later on and even to now, not a lot of people are pushing the envelope, probably cause of lack of support (financial, management), and possibly cause some are just fried to bits cause of constant gigging, which is a result of a lot of things, including piracy and no major label support too.

As an aside, i got a dvd in the post for some soundtrack work i did, and i sat there and laughed cause it was innapropriately used to what I THOUGHT when i originally put the music together...but i managed to sneak in some really fucked up dirty sounds in the mix, and that's what its all abotut for me, anyway.

I still listen to bits and bats, hoping that someone will do something with some really ball breaking production.. turn it a bit inside out and so on. Im willing to chip in, but then its down to how far the outifit wants to take it..as well as the numbers, of course.
