Advice on self-publishing

by Veer
10:01am - 7th August, 2008

Hi all

I’m in the process of writing my first book and I wanted some advice on self publishing

I have seen a couple of companies who self publish but how do you distinguish who is genuine or not? Has anyone self published their book?

I have been going through the writer's handbook and contacting publishing companies but I found a lot of them suggested that if you were not a celebrity or already an established writer then it would be diffcult (have had stuff published over the years, but mainly articles, features and reviews but not creative writing such as poetry or fiction) but I discovered that self-publishing was a good option for new writers. My only concern is, you pay a lot of money to get it published, but what do you get back?

Publishing my book would be a huge achievement, but I would want it to sell as well

I am still writing and researching companies. Because my book is a collection of poetry, I have been told it is more difficult to sell than fiction. Plus some of the fees the agents charge are extortionate!

I am sure there must be some agents who don’t charge fees until the book sells, but can’t seem to find them in the writers hand book

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Veer!

Good to hear you are publishing your own book!

Technically known as 'vanity publishing' it is indeed a big risk, fronting your own money in this project.

I havent had much published, apart from the odd article here and there.

My advice would be to contact as many literary agents as possible to see what advice they can offer you, who knows maybe they know a few loopholes to expolit....or maybe not, either way its good to know before you take the plunge!

Good Luck, hope this helps!!

Veer, id STRONGLY advise you try to "make a name" for yourself a little doing other literary or artistic related pursuits first to increase your chances of getting noticed by agents etc. Otherwise be prepared to have J K Rowling style rejection by the shedload.

Good luck, bud :-D

hi Sheks

Do you mean getting poems published in poetry mags and entering poetry contests?

I know someone who one a poetry contest and was able to get an agent based on that

Might look into that too!

thanks again

Veer,

Poetry is difficult to sell, but I'm sure those agents and publishers interested in poetry would snap up a great poet any day of the week!
(its not a huge marketplace for poetry as you point out, but there is always room for great poets). I would also advise against self publishing, and instead give yourself the opportunity to enjoy being a poet. There are many organisations and online websites (that deal with the spoken word and poetry) where you can also receive acknowledgement for your efforts...whilst you wait for that publishing deal.

In the meantime please feel free to check out my website, www.theasianwriter.co.uk and submit some of your stuff!

Nuff respect to da poetry yaar!

It is the gateway to the soul, however, most poets I know (myself included) are always broke!!

Thats not a good thing.....:(

Hey veer,

Most self-publishing houses, who
consider manuscripts as 'vanity
projects' will bleed you dry and offer
bugger all advice in terms of copy
editing and revision ideas.

Try Ad Libbed - adlibbed.com (who
have a publishing arm Spy). A good
friend of mine got published and
promoted by them. They offer a self-
publishing service but, if they like
your book enough, they may well not
charge you a penny.

Good luck
