The books thread

by noodle
07:38pm - 12th June, 2007

Yep, I copied Pradakid and I'm sure I won't get anything near 200 posts in it, but what the heck! :)

So, what is everyone reading at the moment and are they enjoying it?

I'm currently reading Grapes of Wrath. It was given to me as a present. I thought I'd tackle it over the next few weeks. I'm enjoying it a lot so far. It's full of detailed descriptions which I thought I'd find tedious, but I quite enjoy the whole 'painting in a picture' in your head thing. I hope I don't get bored with it, because when I get bored with a book I just abandon it (much to a lot of people's annoyance).

I am currently reading The Devil Wears Prada. I am enjoying it so far, as it reminds me of the hit US series of Ugly Betty.

noodle, i've been guilty of abandoning the "Grapes of Wrath" before, and i find it very hard to abandon a book i've started reading.

at the moment i'm on holiday mode so i'm reading nora roberts' Quinn Quartet. after i finish this i've got Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey to read before i go back to england on the 27th. Oooh and my new favourite writer is isabel allende - of love and shadows and eva luna are my favourite of hers.

I have a bad habit of reading three or four books at the same time. When i was studying English I had to read so many to cope with my classes and kept the habit with general novels and literary texts I use for research.

However I've currently just finished reading American Psycho and remembered why its one of my favourite novles. I'm also reading Sabastian Falks Birdsong, Rabindranath Tagore's collection of short stories and Penguin's Collection of Arabian Literature.

My heads full of stuff only I can decipher. Its quite messy in there. I think all writers are kind of screwed in the head anyway.

on a slightly random note - has anyone seen posters for the book called 'Young Stalin'.

What do you think of his hair on the front cover? I think its great. I keep seeing it every time I go up on the escalators to work and say - wow, I wish I had hair like this.

Ok maybe I'm just too weird!

I can't believe only 4 people have posted in this thread!

Piyu, I'm definitely not going to abandon the book now...I'm going to see it through to the end, even if it takes me a few months!

you betray the book you're currently reading.

I hope you got a pre-nup before you turned the tv on Piyu!

NO PIYU!

You must not watch TV whilst reading a book. How can you possibly follow the book with background noise?!

im re-reading so it's alright. and re-watching dawson's creek. if it were my first time it would warrant my full attention.

i hate the lady in the 2nd hand book shop here in gib. when i go to buy a book it's a ritual for me. i'll walk in and look for an author or a cover that'll strike me as different and pick it up to read. this woman didn't let me scan the books until i found my calling because she was breathing down my neck and fidgeting. i was so angry i walked out and went to the other 2nd hand book shop and picked up 2 books from there. and their money goes to charity, so it's all good in the end right?

but anyway, the point i wanted to make is that i hate being disturbed whilst looking for books, either by shop assisstants or by other customers who stand in front of u. does anyone else feel that way?

well i tend to go to independant book shop - the one I go to is Pan's Bookstore in Chelsea. They got a wonderful collection and I know all the staff so i quite like them helping me. We have a chat over a book and if i've lost track of time over it than I'd buy it. If not then it goes back on to the shelf.

Well I work in South Kensington hun so I can only roll with the rich and Chelsea is just round the corner.

Although I only bought second hand books for uni. Always buy new books if I've never read it before because I feel cheated if I'm reading someone elses book!

Who you calling 'hun'?

:P

Second hand books rock. I hold them close to my ear before I begin reading. They tell me about their previous readers. Most have been manhandled (as you can imagine). But that's the life of a book, you see.

oooh i've been there pk and i agree, brilliant shop and lovely staff. i like judd books near russel square or the huge oxfam book store on marylebone high street, they're closer to me.

i prefer the way 2nd hand books feel. it feels more personal. and i always wonder what the previous owner thought of the same books. there was a time when i refused to bend the spine of my books, now i like the 2nd hand books because they are wayyyy cheaper and have more character.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone ever told you to chill out (with regards to the neurotic behaviour?) I know that's totally off topic here...

ummm... not really. I don't go over the top. I don't tell other people how to be clean or tidy. I just ensure everything I do is done at a certain standard.

It came from when I was young and spent a lot of time with my mother. I'm very close to my mum and never liked her doing housework cos shes worked hard all her life. So I'd always do the cleaning, washing, ironing, hoovering so she didn't have to. She'd always tell me she prefers it done this particular way and thats the way i've always done it.

I run on military time as well. I'm always punctual and am always aware of things around me. Which is why people can rely on me. They can doss about as much as they want and do whatever they wish cos they know Zee's got his mind on the time and we can't be lost cos he's got the map and knows the cleanest way back home!

I just read the "Five people you meet in heaven" and it was a very moving book but it wasn't the best book i've ever read. i didn't think it was all that special. i think it was someone on this forum who said they read it and said they really enjoyed it but i'm not so sure about it. it was sweet and all but it wasn't as fascinating as i would have expected it to be.

on another note, would anyone recommend reading "the namesake" after having watched the film? does the book give u a different dimension to the story? i really enjoyed watching the film, i'm just wondering whether reading the book is worth spending my £££s on.

Piyu - I heartily recommend The Namesake, I was lucky enough to read it before the movie and it really is a special book. If you can, read the book and then watch the film again, you'll see it totally differently! I wasnt too impressed with Five People You Meet... either as i had read Lovely Bones first and was expecting much more.

I am currently reading Gifted by Nikita Lalwani and before that, I read the Yacoubian Building, about contemporary Egypt, which I also recommend to anyone looking for a good read! What is everyone reading at the mo? Maybe we should start an AIM book club?

i'm buying gifted before i leave because nikita lalwani is sindhi too, and deserves lots of support from fellow sindhis. how is it upto now??

after the 7th i can read so much my eyes pop out. i read the rachel papers by martin amis and i really enjoyed that. its a bit of a boyish read but it was pretty easy going so i liked it. i want to read more murakami, which i'll probably buy and ship back to gib before saturday!

Piyu - Gifted is quite good, v.readable and definetly a strong debut novel - Lalwani is very assured in her style! Yes, After Dark by Murakumi is also on my list of summer reads - any other recommendations?

Yes, I love Margaret Atwood, I read The Handmaid's Tale at school and The Blind Assassin and The Penelopiad, both were v.v. good!

I've read The Bonesetters Daughter, do post your thoughts on it when you've read it!

I have difficulty with Salman Rushdie's books, they are so dense with rich description that after a page, I have to put the book down and try to absorb it all!

There was a different thread going on about "The Kite Runner" and but i couldn't find it so i thought i'd just post here. i just finished reading it and it's a fantastic book! i haven't been able to get into my next novel because i'm still thinking about the characters and the plot in this one.

Culo, i agree that it's a great book. thanks for the recommendation.

The Kite Runner was brilliant and I too found it difficult to get into other stuff after reading it. However, thanks to a book exchange thing at work, I followed it up with Notes On A Scandal by Zoe Heller which is superb, i havent seen the film but the book really is a must read.

Then to cope with my pining for a Harry Potter/Northern Lights style read, i discovered the Otori trilogy by Lian Hearn which i am imploring everyone to read before Universal spoil the magic by making a film about it!! It is so well written, simple and totally in another world whilst retaining a sense of reality. The first one is called Across The Nightingale Floor and honestly, cannot recommend it enough!!! Has anyone read it?
