A new book by the Paris-based Panos Institute offers a broad survey of media and cultural diversity in key West European countries together with Canada and the US.
It is also hosting a debate next week on the issue of cultural diversity in European media (details below).
How successfully is the media responding to the challenges of cultural diversity in countries such as France, Britain, Germany and the US?
What are the innovative actions and best practices? What roles are played by public and private institutions and civil society at large?
The book offers a snapshot of the complex relationship between the media, public opinion and institutions over the past 20 years.
Compared with their British counterparts for example, the media in France have been slow to embrace the nation’s cultural diversity, though this has been changing in recent years.
The Institute says it is aimed at media professionals, research centres, public and private institutions, voluntary associations and all of those interested in the challenges raised media representations of cultural diversity.
The book will be available from the site: www.karthala.com from this month.
