New book, debate, compare media diversity across Europe

A new book by the Paris-based Panos Institute offers a broad survey of media and cultural diversity in key West European countries together with Canada and the US.

It is also hosting a debate next week on the issue of cultural diversity in European media (details below).

Panjab Radio becomes second national Asian radio station

West London based Panjab Radio will broadcast across the UK from December on digital DAB radio.

The company’s managing director Surjit Ghuman told AIM Magazine that he was very pleased to join Asian Network as the only other Asian station available nationally on DAB.

Shock for modelling agencies with up-front fees ban

Modelling agencies fleecing Asian women across the country are likely to face strong penalties with new government legislation.

The government is planning to announce that modelling agencies would be banned from charging up-front fees.

The plans were aimed at “unscrupulous agents”, a minister said, who asked women for fees in advance of any modelling work.

In most cases the work never comes through and women pay extortionate fees for being on the register.

British Asian authors shift from identity crisis to personal stories

There seems to be an explicit shift in mood among Brit-Asian authors. Taking a step away from oft-repeated tales of forced marriages and identity crisis, the move is towards crystallizing their individualities in modern Britain.

The voices are stark and powerful, as they explore different themes that were largely unexplored by their predecessors.
