Mother India remixed for a new generation
September 1, 2009

One of India’s most critically acclaimed and popular films – Mother India – has been remixed, re-edited and rescored into a 45-minute silent film. (A preview is below)

The work is a project by Kala Phool, an arts and development agency, which has brought in DJ Tigerstyle to reinterpret the score through a unique live performance.

The resulting work, called MI21, is currently on a sell-out tour across the UK.

Indy Hunjan, founder and director of Kala Phool said the project had been in development for nearly a decade.

“Mother India is incredible,” she says, “and seeing such a strong female lead role in a film from a socialist era with all the myriad of issues, it’s easy to see its relevance in today’s society, across cultures and beliefs.”

The film Mother India (1957) came to symbolise the post-colonial Indian psyche interpreted through the ambitions, struggles, compassion and sheer will to survive of the central ‘Mother’ character Radha.

It starred screen legends Nargis and Sunil Dutt and was also the first film from India to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

MI21 began its tour in August and will travel across the UK, with an international tour planned to start next year.
