The future of east London based Club Asia radio looks uncertain after media regulator Ofcom confirmed that it had gone into administration.
Reports from presenters and industry insiders earlier this week indicated it had started broadcasting erratically and presenters were asked not to come in to work.
Rumours of problems at the station started circulating after it abruptly stopped broadcasting on Sky digital earlier this year.
By early this week the Asian radio station had taken off most of its presenters off air. It started broadcasting just music, interrupted by the occasional ad rather than any discussion by presenters.
Former presenters and sources close to the station told AIM Magazine there were some rumours it may be bought out. But it’s not yet clear who might buy it.
But repeated calls to the station have not been picked up or returned by the management.
An Ofcom spokesperson told AIM Magazine yesterday evening: “We have been notified that Club Asia have gone into administration.”
Due diligence on the company’s accounts may take some time. Club Asia’s records at Companies House still do not indicate that it has gone into administration.
Club Asia was launched in 2003 to appeal to a distinctly younger Asian audience. A few years later however it found that its demographic was not the one advertisers primarily wanted to target and removed the word ‘young’ from its tagline.
Its management also took issue with media reports at AIM magazine that suggested it catered for a younger Asian audience.
With listening figures stabilising around the 200,000 mark, it was constantly squeezed by bigger rivals Sunrise Radio and BBC Asian Network.
The station was primarily run by sisters Humerah Ahmad and Sumerah Srivastava.
