Two films released in cinemas next month, by the same director, will tackle mixed heritage relationships and homosexualty among Asian families.
Writer and director Shamim Sarif made both films with the same lead cast: actresses Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth.
I Can’t Think Straight is a romantic comedy featuring love between an Indian and a Palestinian woman living in London.
It also stars Nina Wadia. (trailers below)
Tala, a London-based Palestinian, is preparing for her elaborate Middle Eastern wedding when she meets Leyla, a young British Indian woman who is dating her best friend. They could not be more different, but the attraction is immediate and goes deeper than friendship.
Inevitably, both face considerable resistance from friends and family.
Shamim Sarif’s second film, The World Unseen, is based in 1950’s apartheid South Africa.
The film features a young woman, Amina, who breaks the rules of her conventional Indian community in South Africa by running a cafĂ© in a “grey area” for those who fall outside the strict black and white’ rules of the apartheid-led government. Slowly but surely, she develops feelings for Miriam, a doting wife who is awed by Amina’s energy and willpower.

Simultaneously released in the UK on 3rd April – the films cover similar subject matters but set in different circumstances.
I Can’t Think Straight features at the bfi London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival on Friday 27 March.
A charity screening of The World Unseen will take place on Tuesday 31 March at Bafta, London.
