An anthology of literary pieces tackling the controversial topic of ‘the veil’ will be launched in March, in London. Behind the Hijab has contributions from both Muslim and Non-Muslim women in the UK.
Monsoon Press, which is partly behind the event, say the aim of the book is to enlighten those who have preconceived ideas about women who wear the hijab and perhaps encourage a greater level of understanding and mutual respect.
“This book demonstrates that beneath the veil are intelligent, articulate, humorous, ambitious and fun loving individuals; real women making a significant contribution to British society,” say the publishers.
Key speakers include Bonnie Greer (Critic & Playwright), Baroness Pola Uddin, Penny Wrout (BBC Communities Editor) and Cllr Rania Khan. The event is being hosted by Rabina Khan of Silsila Productions and Monsoon Press.
Wednesday 4 March 2009, between 6-9pm, at Oxford House Community Centre, Derbyshire Street, London. .
Entry is free.
