Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha’s latest film - Angus, thongs, and Perfect Snogging - opens across cinemas tomorrow.
The teenage flick is adapted from Louise Rennison’s first two books about an Eastbourne-based teenager Georgia Nicolson.
In an interview with AIM magazine two years ago she said it was a ‘Bridget Jones at 14′ film.
“It’s about first love and that whole thing girls go through when they don’t really know how to kiss or what to do with their hands when someone kisses them. It’s just really quite innocent, but it’s also quite funny,” she said at the time.
If the film does well, she will have a whole series of books to draw from for follow-ups.
She told the Independent newspaper in an interview today that the pressure for making up a follow up to Beckham was still intense:
It’s hard for me. When I go to weddings or parties, anywhere in fact, Indians are constantly on my case.” She then switches into a strong Indian accent to mimic them: “Make another Beckham, make a good film for us, there are not enough films about us.” Switching back to her own west London tones, she adds, “I kind of feel the pressure but I wanted to do something else. I didn’t want to do another Asian film straightaway. That’s why I chose to do Dallas.
But it has taken two years for the project to come to fruition partly because of issues with other projects. She was signed up to direct the film version of Dallas, but pulled out later because she felt the audience just wans’t there.
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging opens on 25th July.
