This year’s London Mela will be held on 10th August at west London’s Gunnersbury Park as with previous years.
BBC Asian Network announced this week it had signed up to be the event’s principal media partner for the third year running.
There were some fears among Asian artists that the new London Mayor Boris Johnson was planning to axe funding for the London Mela.
His new diversity advisor Munira Mirza had attracted intense criticism in recent weeks for dropping the anti-racist message of the London Rise Festival, held this Sunday.
But much of the preparation behind this year’s London Mela had been done prior to the mayoral election. So there is still the real possibility that Boris Johnson axes the London Mela next year.
This year the festival will headline music artists Raghav (pictured), Jassi Sidhu, Taz and Bollywood vocalist Labh Janjua. The Main stage will be hosted by Asian Network talents Adil Ray, Murtz and Jas Rao.
Asian Network head of music Mark Strippel said: “This year sees Asian Network turning up the volume at London Mela, delivering some of the biggest British-Asian and Bollywood music stars and a bigger online and visual platform around our activity.”
The digital radio stations’ very own Mix Tent will feature DJs Kayper, Panjabi Hit Squad, Sonny Ji, Ameet Chana and Nerm.
Asian Network will provide live coverage from 2pm of all the action from Gunnersbury Park and feature interviews from the key players who organised the event on Sonia Deol’s show (weekdays from 9am) in the run up to the Mela.
The London Mela is a free family-friendly festival. As well as music, the event features circus, outdoor theatre and visual arts.
It is produced by Ealing Council in partnership with Hounslow Council, and supported by Greater London Authority.
